Throwback Thursday 8.23.12

Throwback Thursday is a weekly meme hosted by The Housework Can Wait and Never Too Fond of Books!

Here’s how it works:

  1. Pick any book released more than 5 years ago. Adult, YA, Children’s; doesn’t matter. Any book will do.
  2. Write up a short summary of the book (include the title, author, and cover art) and an explanation of why you love it. Make sure to link back to The Housework Can Wait and Never Too Fond of Books in your post.
  3. Link up your post at The Housework Can Wait or Never Too Fond of Books.
  4. Visit as many blogs as you can, reminisce about books you loved, and discover some “new” books for your TBR list!

Feel free to grab the Throwback Thursday button code from the sidebar to use in your posts.

Thanks for participating, and we look forward to seeing which books you choose to remember!

Original Release Date: September 30, 1987
Title: The Hatchet
Author: Gary Paulsen

Summary: Thirteen-year-old Brian Robeson is on his way to visit his father when the single-engine plane in which he is flying crashes. Suddenly, Brian finds himself alone in the Canadian wilderness with nothing but a tattered Windbreaker and the hatchet his mother gave him as a present — and the dreadful secret that has been tearing him apart since his parent’s divorce. But now Brian has no time for anger, self pity, or despair — it will take all his know-how and determination, and more courage than he knew he possessed, to survive.

I first read this for school in the sixth grade, I believe. Then it showed up on the Battle of the Books list the following year. And I’m pretty sure I read it several more times after that. Brian’s struggle for survival and the skills that he learned while he was alone always left me in awe.

I read this one a couple of times when I was younger. There’s just something really interesting about a story like this one, especially because it’s all about survival.

Every time I watch Castaway, I think of this book. I loved the section where he learns how to spot the guinea hens – great description. Great Throwback!

I know I read this and enjoyed it in middle school, but I honestly can’t for the life of me remember it. I need to reread.

I’m late on commenting this week (and every week), but I’m finally making the rounds!
