Bout of Books Read-a-Thon

It’s that time again!

Bout of Books time! And this time, I actually have time to devote to reading! School is OVER! I just graduated so once I’m home from work each evening, I can devote my time to reading and this readathon! That hasn’t happened in ages. I am so effing excited!

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, January 7th and runs through Sunday, January 13th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure, and the only reading competition is between you and your usual number of books read in a week. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 6.0 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog.

-From the Bout of Books 6.0 team

I honestly haven’t spent much time thinking about what I will read this time. The holidays were so crazy that I haven’t had time to think about it until I sat down to write this post.

This time, because I finally have time to read again – I’m going to aim for 10 books. I’m pretty sure I can pull it off, so long as I stay away from the TV!

This round I’m also hosting a challenge on January 8! This will be my first time hosting a challenge and I’m super excited about it. It’s going to be so much fun!

Books to Read (subject to change at my fancy)

  • Going Vintage by Lindsey Leavitt
  • The Goddess Inheritance by Aimee Carter
  • Fractured Soul by Rachel McClellan
  • Rot and Ruin by Jonathan Maberry
  • Such a Rush by Jennifer Echols
  • Deadly Cool by Gemma Halliday
  • Social Suicide by Gemma Halliday
  • Someone Else’s Life by Katie Dale
  • Redshirts by John Scalzi (this one may come off the list – I also have the audiobook narrated by Wil Wheaton, and that kind of trumps me wanting to read it)
  • Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

Going Vintage by Lindsey Leavitt was a book I got from NetGalley. It was just what I needed last night too! A contemporary YA read that veers from the traditional a bit with some predictable bits and some not predictable bits. It ended on a high note that was not your usual cliche.

Deadly Cool by Gemma Halliday ended up surprising me. For some reason, I expected it to be paranormal in nature, but it was just a straight up murder mystery. Again – just what I needed last night! It was a quick read, but entertaining. It should have been predictable, but it wasn’t. Two thumbs up!

I hosted one of the challenges today and it was epic! Several submissions came in overnight (before the deadline!) that I need to score before I can generate the giveaway winner. Check back later today to see who won and what all of the challenge answers were!

The Goddess Inheritance by Aimee Carter was… disappointing. I’m still going to give it a 4 overall but after the first two books in the series set the bar so high, something about this one just fell flat for me.

My goal for tonight is NO HEADACHE. I’ve read the past three nights with a headache, so here’s hoping I don’t have to do that again.

I took a break from reading and Bout of Books today. No headache, no reading. It was pretty nice actually. I did, however, get caught up on watching the Pretty Little Liars premiere! :)

Unexpectedly went out with friends after work, so my planned time for reading went out the door!

Once again, had plans all day! Family time + social time = no time for reading. This trying not to be a hermit is really hindering my reading time! :/

Social Suicide by Gemma Halliday was another fun, quirky, quick read. I also started Rot and Ruin by Jonathan Maberry – I just didn’t get very far! I ended up spending the day with my mom, but at least I did get some reading in.

Overall – I can’t say I’m disappointed. Yes 4 books is a far cry from the 10 I wanted to read – but at least I read! And I spent time with family and friends this weekend so I definitely can’t complain about that.

Hosting the challenge on Tuesday was the highlight of my week (congratulations Jennifer for winning the giveaway!) because it was so danged fun! And I can’t wait until the next round to join in the fun again.

Jonathan Maberry’s books ‘stare’ at me every time I see them on the shelf in a store. I’m going to have to break down and pick one up one day. Good luck! I know you can do it ;) Have fun!

I’m really looking forward to stress-free reading time. I feel like I haven’t had that in AGES. This is going to be me just reading and having FUN.

I enjoyed Under the Never Sky, I think it’s a great read for a readathon! I just bought Rot and Ruin, and I’ve heard it’s really good, so I hope you enjoy it. Good luck with your goals, 10 books in a week would definitely be wishful thinking for me! :)

I’m super stoked about both of those – I can’t wait to read them!

Thanks! I think I can pull it off, but if I don’t I’ll still be happy that I was reading.

Oooh, I read Deadly Cool for my first BoB! It’s a great one to read if you’re going by how many books you read, it’s a little shorter, and the language makes it a fast read. Good luck hitting 10 books – that seems like an awful lot but you can do it! :D

Thanks! It’s been staring at me for awhile. Ruby bought them for me in the Summer book exchange and I haven’t had a chance to read them yet! I can’t wait to finally cross them off my list.

My only tip is to HAVE FUN! That’s what this readathon is all about. It’s a no stress way to network with other readers/book bloggers and to catch up on some books you want to read. So kick back and read. :)

OMG – awesome goals! I wish I could read 10 books in a week – that’s amazing! I just recently finished Under the Never Sky and it was such a great read! I hope you achieve all of your goals.

Thanks so much for stopping by my goal post as well. I just subscribed to your blog – I LOVE it! Another reason why I love Bout of Books… just when I think I have discovered all the book blogs, there is MORE :D Your blog is absolutely beautiful by the way, I love the design it’s stunning!

Great list! I hope you accomplish your goals this week =D

Oooh, good luck! I have Patient Zero on my TBR shelves, so I’ll be eager to see what you think of Rot & Ruin! I’m dead excited this week too – it’s the first time EVER that I won’t be working six out of the seven days, I’m OFF six out of the seven days, which for me is THE MOST AWESOME THING EVER. I run a bookshop so I think everyone thinks I’m mad for being really excited about… sitting at home and reading. :)

I’m starting off with Jane Eyre, then Harry Potter #1, then… who knows. I’ve got plenty to choose from anyway! Happy reading this week!

You have some great sounding books on this list! I really want to read Deadly Cool – I hope you enjoy it & good luck with your goals!

The Goddess Inheritance is on my radar and I can’t wait to read it (probably in a few weeks). I hope that you enjoy it.

I am trying to motivate myself to unplug in the evenings and read more. I lack that kind of discipline at the moment.
