“Don’t play those games with me, young lady,” said Keith, “I’ve been around too long, and don’t have that much time left that I would enjoy the game now.  You liked him, and you know it.”

Alexa dropped dejectedly down in the seat across from Keith.

“Did I really blow it?  I can’t fall for anyone again, Keith.  I really can’t.”

Keith chuckled and looked down at his empty coffee cup.

“How old are you?  Twenty-six?  Twenty-eight max?  Don’t you think that’s kind of a long time to be alone?  You may have to do that ‘kissing-the-frogs’ thing for a while, but you don’t have to sleep with every frog you kiss, and you don’t have to expect every one of them to turn into a prince.  But you could at least enjoy yourself along the way.  I need some coffee.”

Alexa sighed and reached across the table to pour the steaming coffee into his cup.

“I can’t, Keith.  I mean it; and I don’t want to.  I don’t want to deal with another human being in my life.”

“Yes, you do.” He said with determination.

“How do you–How could you even remotely know that?”

Keith looked at her across the table.  He picked up his coffee cup and took a slow sip, then put the cup back down on the table and stared into the dark liquid.

“I know that because there isn’t a human being on the face of this earth that doesn’t need to be loved.”  He looked into her eyes.  “You’re not betraying the memory of your father, nor are you giving in to a life you swore you’d never want.  Be human Alexa; live again.  Square your shoulders, take a deep breath and give it a go.  It’s a ride you can stop at any time.”

And there’s a giveaway!

Bout of Books 9.0 Create a Story Challenge (& Giveaway!)

January 10, 2014 Fun Stuff, Giveaways 21

Bout of Books

Update: A winner has been selected! Congratulations SaraRose! Check your email for details!

—-

Welcome to Day 5 of Bout of Books!  I hope you’re all having as much fun as I am. Are you on track with your goals? Been doing lots of challenges? I hope you’re ready for a super fun Bout of Books challenge today – Create A Story.

The rules are simple:

  1. Open your current book to the last page you read.
  2. Using the last word of every line, create a poem or story. You must use every word (but they do not have to be in order), and you may add punctuation as necessary. If a word is split between the end of the line and the beginning of the next one, you may choose whether or not to use it.
  3. Create a post (or tweet or video) that showcases your masterpiece. If you don’t have anywhere else to post it, you can add it as a comment here and use the comment link as your entry.
  4. Add it to the linky on this post.

Example:  Page 199 of Revealed by P.C. and Kristin Cast. My words are: for, name, What, repeated, said, lesson, him, but, here, one, the, gown, together, are, he, it, chest, look, her, cruel, me, his, together, it, was, body, punish, and to.

My story:

His body was said to punish; the lesson repeated cruel.
What name but one, together for me.
He, him, it. Together are speaking here.
Her gown, chest – before it – look behind.

It’s a bit like magnetic poetry in the way that it can get nonsensical – but it’s so much fun! As you can tell, I really got stuck on that last line with the leftover words I had. But I still created something. And now I want to go dig out my old magnetic poetry tins!

This challenge will be open for 24 hours (from midnight to midnight CST), and one lucky participant (who is also signed up for Bout of Books) will be randomly selected to win:

a book of their choice (up to $15) from Amazon or The Book Depository.
Winner can specify physical copy or e-copy.

Remember that the winner must have an entry in the linky AND be listed on the official Master List of Bout of Books participants. This giveaway is open internationally, to countries that these vendors ship to.

Second Verse by Jennifer Walkup – Review & Giveaway (Blog Tour Stop)Release Date: October 1, 2013
Title: Second Verse
Author: Jennifer Walkup
Pages: 288
Publisher: Luminis Books
Source: Novel Publicity Blog Tour
Available: Barnes and Noble | Amazon
From the Publisher: Can love last more than a lifetime? Can Murder?

Bad things come in threes. In Shady Springs, that includes murder.

Murder Now

Lange Crawford’s move to Shady Springs, Pennsylvania, lands her a group of awesome friends, a major crush on songwriter Vaughn, and life in a haunted, 200-year-old farmhouse. It also brings The Hunt: an infamous murder mystery festival where students solve a fake, gruesome murder scheme during the week of Halloween. Well, supposedly fake.

Murder Then

Weeks before The Hunt, Lange and her friends hold a séance in the farmhouse’s eerie barn. When a voice rushes through, whispering haunting words that only she and Vaughn can hear, Lange realizes it’s begging for help. The mysterious voice leads Lange and Vaughn to uncover letters and photos left behind by a murdered girl, Ginny, and they become obsessed with her story and the horrifying threats that led to her murder.

Murder Yet to Come

But someone doesn’t like their snooping, and Lange and Vaughn begin receiving the same threats that Ginny once did. The mysterious words from the barn become crucial to figuring out Ginny’s past and discovering how their own past is connected to hers. They must work fast to uncover the truth or risk finding out if history really does repeat itself.
4 Stars

I really had no idea what to expect from Second Verse. It sounded interesting and I’m always a sucker for a seance. So I volunteered for the tour and crossed my fingers, hoping that I’d like it.

I loved it.

I’d gotten pretty close to burning out again, so I’ve found it difficult to find books that keep me invested. This one grabbed me early on and I read it in a single sitting. Like Lange, I didn’t share the town’s fascination with The Hunt. It just sounded too gruesome and macabre for me. But I liked her idea of the seance, especially once I discovered that her old farmhouse and barn were the scenes of a murder/suicide 50 years back. The seance had creepy results – wind, scratching, and a voice that only Lange and Vaughn could hear – and suddenly we’re thrown into a paranormal mystery that left me reeling at every turn.

I never once guessed the twist (well twists – there are two) at the end.

But through the mystery – and the unending reminders of death – love is a constant. Lange and Vaughn belong together and watching them realize it, and also understand what that means, was exactly the right amount of lightness needed in the midst of the darkness.

If you like dark and creepy; if you like paranormal mysteries; if you like love conquering all – then this book is definitely the book for you.

For Real by Chelsea M. Cameron – Review & Giveaway (Blog Tour Stop)Release Date: November 14, 2013
Title: For Real
Series: Rules of Love #1
Author: Chelsea Cameron
Publisher: DRC Publishing
Source: Inkslinger PR Blog Tours
Available: Barnes and Noble | Amazon

From the Publisher: Two people. One fake relationship. What could go wrong?

When virgin Shannon Travers gets fed up with her friends demanding that she find a boyfriend, she enlists the help of tattooed, mohawk-rocking graphic design student Jett. He’s more than happy to play along with their Fake Relationship, including the Ten Rules of Fake Dating that control-freak Shannon comes up with. Even if he likes to violate them. Repeatedly.

But what happens when Fake Dating starts to feel… not fake anymore? Will Shannon be willing to let go and embrace the first thing in her life that’s ever felt REAL?
4 Stars

For Real completely blew my expectations out of the water. I knew that I had absolutely LOVED My Favorite Mistake but I just didn’t expect to get that level of quality out of another romance. Yes, I’m a snob.

And, yes I was wrong.

Shannon is a virgin. And she’s tired of her friends giving her crap about it. One night they push her too far and she snaps. (Seriously, they go way too far – how she managed to stay friends with those guys is beyond me). She meets Jett (well, re-meets – they’d briefly met once before) and goes home with him. Not to actually have sex with him – just so it looks like she did. But then Shannon and Jett take it one step further – they plan an entire fake relationship to get her friends off her back.

Fake Girlfriend? Meet Fake Boyfriend.

It’s adorable.

They make up rules and everything (Rule #3 is no incidental contact unless they’re in public where they’re expected to be all over each other).

But it turns out… a fake relationship feels an awful lot like a real one. Especially when two people get along as well as Jett and Shannon do.

As the date of doom (the date they planned to “break up”) approaches… things get intense.

And it’s just fabulous.

And honestly – it’s not just Jett and Shannon that made me love this book! Javi and Hazel (the roommates, respectively) were interesting characters in their own right. Enough so that something tells me the next book might just be about those two.

For Real was honestly the best kind of book. It wasn’t insta-love – we got to experience them fall in love as they did. It was sweet. It was beautiful. And it made me remember why I love to read about love.

The Marquess of Cake by Heather Hiestand – Review & Giveaway (Blog Tour Stop)

November 8, 2013 Blog Tour, Giveaways, Review 5 ★★★

The Marquess of Cake by Heather Hiestand – Review & Giveaway (Blog Tour Stop)

The Marquess of Cake by Heather Hiestand – Review & Giveaway (Blog Tour Stop)Release Date: July 4, 2013
Title: The Marquess of Cake
Series: Redcakes #1
Author: Heather Hiestand
Pages: 234
Publisher: Kensington Books
Source: Publisher Provided
From the Publisher: Coffee…tea…or a pastry chef sweeter than any confection…

Scotch trifle fit for Queen Victoria, scones with clotted cream…Alys Redcake knows the way to a man’s heart. Yet she is unaware that with each morsel—and flash of ankle—she is seducing the handsome marquess frequenting her father’s tea shop. Unmarried at twenty-six, Alys’s first love is the family business. But thoughts of the gentleman’s touch are driving her to distraction…

With his weakness for sugar, the Marquess of Hatbrook can imagine no more desirable woman than one scented with cake and spice. Mistaking Alys for a mere waitress, he has no doubt she would make a most delicious mistress. And when he finds himself in need of an heir, he plans to make her his convenient bride. Yet as they satisfy their craving for one another, business and pleasure suddenly collide. Will Hatbrook’s passion for sweets—and for Alys—be his heart’s undoing?
3 Stars

I had such yo-yo feelings about this book while I was reading it. Before I started it, I thought I would adore it. But then I actually started it and came pretty close to putting it down without finishing it. But by the end, I realized I enjoyed it and was glad I stuck it out.

It just wasn’t really what I expected.

Alys works in her father’s bakery and tea shop. She meets the Marquess of Hatbrook one day when he pops in for a quick treat.

And then many pages are spent where Alys’ father bemoans her station and fires her from the bakery because a lady shouldn’t work (you must understand that while Alys was raised to be a hard worker, her father is now a much higher station in society – he’s even been knighted – and her younger sisters were educated as ladies). And the Marquess spends most of his time whining about food (he’s hypoglycemic in an age where that word doesn’t exist yet) while nursing one heck of a sweet tooth.

But between all of the fighting and whining, something positively delightful happens.

Alys and the Marquess fall in love (this is a romance novel after all!).

And it was beautiful to watch. I had hoped for something steamy and intoxicating (there was scene in particular that does fit the bill, in a bathtub no less!) but instead we got the slow burn (very slow in parts).

It was an enjoyable romance, especially if you enjoy your romance on the lighter side with lots of extra details about life. This one doesn’t just go straight for the bedroom. In many ways, it was almost a cross between a historical and contemporary romance.

Check it out – especially if you have a sweet tooth! And don’t miss the sequel, One Taste of Scandal, coming December 5, 2013!
