Welcome to my stop on the Now and Again blog tour hosted by YA Bound Book Tours.  Click HERE to see the full blog tour schedule!

inanutshell2Not only is this the sophomore book in a series, but it’s self-published to boot! And it’s incredible. Brenda Rothert writes her heroines in a way that I don’t generally see – and it’s knocking my socks off.

From the Publisher: Once again, 26-year-old Layla Carson has the attention of a man eager to satisfy her. Ben Montrose, the hot, confident cop who gets off on frustrating her, is eager to show her just how arresting he can be. But as a reforming sexaholic, Layla’s sworn off casual hookups, and doesn’t miss the days of her early 20s –much.

Ben’s caught off-guard when the sexy, outspoken attorney turns him on and then turns him down. But the confident former Marine knows he can handle the simple seduction of a beautiful woman. He finds Layla’s weak spot – competition, which he happens to share – and challenges her to a game that could make them, or destroy them.

As they compete to crown the master of seduction, Ben and Layla discover there’s more to their game than power and foreplay. But as the stakes go up, they realize the game has changed, and they both stand to lose more than they bargained for.
5 Stars

I really had mixed feelings going into this book. I absolutely adored the first one (Now and Then), but I really didn’t like Layla’s character in that book at all. She was selfish and spoiled and a little bit vindictive. I wasn’t sure how her character was going to be redeemed enough to be the main character – especially a likable main character.

I worried for nothing.

Rothert nailed it.

I won’t say all women do this, but there are women in the world who use sex as a way to find their worth and validation. Layla is exactly that kind of woman (though we see that side of her most prominently in Now and Then). This book takes place seven months later, after she’s decided to stop having casual sex and end her desperate search for a husband.

Without men and sex to give Layla her worth, she becomes a very different woman.

We begin to see her insecurities more prominently since she doesn’t have anything to hide behind.

It was an extraordinary transformation.

And when she meets Ben… oh my.

Those two were together for four weeks without sex and they still had some damn steamy scenes.

Where can I find one?

The only (only) problem/nitpick I have with this book is that Cole’s personality was kind of out of character. Emma and Cole were back (yay!) but Cole was jealous and downright mean to Layla and Ben – and then his actions were never addressed again. It was just dropped as if it never happened. Cole was way too amazing in Now and Then to turn into an asshole.

Overall, this book was just as amazing as the first one. The romance was epic and steamy and just… perfect. I laughed and cried and got angry and… well, I felt all the things I want to feel when I’m experiencing life with a beloved character/friend.
