From the Publisher: Mary Ann Rivers continues her Burnside family series—perfect for readers of Kristan Higgins, Jill Shalvis, and Ruthie Knox—as two people try to share their hearts without losing their cool.

Dr. Sam Burnside is convinced that volunteering at an urban green-space farm in Lakefield, Ohio, is a waste of time—especially with his new health clinic about to open. He only goes to mollify his partner, suspecting she wants him to lighten up. Then Sam catches sight of Nina Paz, a woman who gives off more heat than a scorcher in July. Her easy smile and flirty, sizzling wit has him forgetting his infamous need for control.

Widowed when her husband was killed in Afghanistan, Nina has learned that life exists to take chances. As the daughter of migrant workers turned organic farmers, she’s built an exciting and successful business by valuing new opportunities and working hard to take care of her own. But when Sam pushes for a relationship that goes beyond their hotter-than-fire escapades, Nina ignores her own hard-won wisdom. She isn’t ready for a man who needs saving—even if her heart compels her to take the greatest risk of all: love.
5 Stars

I don’t know how she does it, but Mary Ann Rivers has taken the most unlikable character from Live (the first book in the Burnside Series) and turned him into someone my heart positively aches for.

This book is one of the most shining illustrations of the notion that what you see isn’t always what you get when it comes to fucked up humans.

And it’s amazing.

When I realized this book was about Sam, the eldest of the Burnside clan, I was turned off. I loved Des and Hefin in Live and Sam didn’t understand their love. He basically told Des she was stupid for falling for this man. And then he railed on his other sister Sarah while she was in the hospital.

His purpose in that book was mostly to make me want to punch him.

But now… now I understand who Sam is. Why Sam is the way he is.

Seeing someone from the outside and then spending time in their head can make you see them completely differently.

My journey through this book was, as always when it comes to a Mary Ann Rivers novel, documented through Twitter.

That’s basically it in a nutshell. I was wary. The sex scenes were incredibly steamy. Sam opened up and I saw who he really is. And then I cried tears of joy.

That’s one hell of a journey for a single book.

My advice to you? Read everything Mary Ann Rivers has ever written. You won’t regret it.

March 18, 2014 Fun Stuff 0

“Dawn’s in trouble, must be Tuesday” is a weekly event where I feature favorite quotes from books, movies, or television shows that I’ve loved and need to share.

“Man, that girl. She just… I think I’d be madly in love with her if she didn’t scare me so much. But maybe that’s why I like her. Not like I like like her.” ~From Better Off Friends by Elizabeth Eulberg

The goal for this month is to read Dead Witch Walking and The Good, the Bad, and the Undead.

deadwitchwalking

All the creatures of the night gather in “the Hollows” of Cincinnati, to hide, to prowl, to party … and to feed.

Vampires rule the darkness in a predator-eat-predator world rife with dangers beyond imagining — and it’s Rachel Morgan’s job to keep that world civilized.

A bounty hunter and witch with serious sex appeal and an attitude, she’ll bring ’em back alive, dead … or undead.

goodbadundead

Rachel Morgan, sexy witch, independent bounty hunter, prowls the downtown Cincinnati for criminal creatures of the night. She can handle leather-clad vamps and a cunning demon or two. But a serial killer who feeds on the experts in the most dangerous kind of black magic is an ancient, implacable evil that threatens her very soul.

The Details:

The Hollows Reading Challenge

March 10, 2014 Challenges, Fun Stuff 7

TheHollowsReadingChallengeSM2

If you’re a fan of Kim Harrison, then you know that her series The Hollows has only one more book to go (side note: I just finished The Undead Pool and it was spectacular).

Thirteen books in a series is a lot, and it can be easy to remember the emotions each book evoked in us, but the specific plot-lines and story elements are often forgotten over the years.

Because I want to remember the whole saga from start to finish, I am hosting a Reading Challenge for the entire Hollows series! You can join me in reading 2 books of the series each month and you’ll be eligible for prizes along the way (prizes include swag and both signed & unsigned copies of Kim’s books).

My goal is to have the entire series read (or re-read) by the time the final book (Title and Release Date currently unannounced) is released. I had hoped that we could do an entire year with 1 book per month, but I was recently informed by Kim herself that while she can’t tell me the release date, it is significantly sooner than the year’s wait we had for The Undead Pool.

So I’m crossing my fingers and hoping that our end dates align! If not, the schedule may be adjusted once the release date is finally announced.

The Challenge

To read (or re-read) AND review (or post about) all 12 books in Kim Harrison’s The Hollows series between March 17 and September 16, 2014.

What You Need to Know

The Hollows Reading Challenge will run from March 17, 2014 through September 16, 2014* and you can join any time during this period by signing up on this post.

You DO NOT need to be a book blogger to join! Anyone who wants to read this series can join the challenge, so long as you have somewhere to post a review and/or talk about the books (examples include Twitter, a Goodreads or Booklikes account, YouTube, etc.).

You don’t have to keep pace with the Challenge, so long as all of the books are read and reviewed between March 18 and September 17. However, each book you read and review (or post about) during the scheduled month will give you an extra entry into the giveaway at the end of the challenge.

You can read the books in any format you want to, including audiobooks.

Each month on the 18th there will be a post where you can link up your reviews or posts for THAT MONTH only. You should post your reviews individually (ie 2 books, 2 links).

If this is a re-read for you, you don’t have to write brand new reviews! Just write a post about the book and your experience reading it this time.

*I may need to change up the schedule IF the final book is released prior to September 16, 2014.

The Giveaways

Pre-order of Book 13 giveaway: For every 13 people that actively participate in this challenge, I will be giving away one pre-order of the currently un-named final book of the series. To be counted as an active participant, you must sign up through the linky in this post and will need to have read and reviewed at least two of the full-length books during the six months of this challenge. The winners will be chosen at the end of the challenge.

At the end of each month, I will be giving away one of Kim Harrison’s books. Some of these giveaways will include SIGNED copies. Giveaways will also include some form of swag (for example, a Hollows bus token or Rachel’s coat check tag). Winners will be chosen from those who linked up their reviews/posts to that month’s linky.

If you read each book on schedule, you will get an additional entry into the Book 13 giveaway.

Reading and reviewing (or posting about) one of the Extra Credit reads listed below will also give you an additional entry into the Book 13 giveaway.

Extra Credit Reads

You will get extra entries each month for each of the novellas and/or graphic novels you read. Links to reviews or posts for the extra credit reads should be left on the challenge post during the month you read and posted about it. I have posted where each was originally published, but all of the shorts and novellas through 10.1 were collected into a single volume – Into the Woods.

“Don’t play those games with me, young lady,” said Keith, “I’ve been around too long, and don’t have that much time left that I would enjoy the game now.  You liked him, and you know it.”

Alexa dropped dejectedly down in the seat across from Keith.

“Did I really blow it?  I can’t fall for anyone again, Keith.  I really can’t.”

Keith chuckled and looked down at his empty coffee cup.

“How old are you?  Twenty-six?  Twenty-eight max?  Don’t you think that’s kind of a long time to be alone?  You may have to do that ‘kissing-the-frogs’ thing for a while, but you don’t have to sleep with every frog you kiss, and you don’t have to expect every one of them to turn into a prince.  But you could at least enjoy yourself along the way.  I need some coffee.”

Alexa sighed and reached across the table to pour the steaming coffee into his cup.

“I can’t, Keith.  I mean it; and I don’t want to.  I don’t want to deal with another human being in my life.”

“Yes, you do.” He said with determination.

“How do you–How could you even remotely know that?”

Keith looked at her across the table.  He picked up his coffee cup and took a slow sip, then put the cup back down on the table and stared into the dark liquid.

“I know that because there isn’t a human being on the face of this earth that doesn’t need to be loved.”  He looked into her eyes.  “You’re not betraying the memory of your father, nor are you giving in to a life you swore you’d never want.  Be human Alexa; live again.  Square your shoulders, take a deep breath and give it a go.  It’s a ride you can stop at any time.”

And there’s a giveaway!
