From the Publisher: When the magic is up, rogue mages cast their spells and monsters appear, while guns refuse to fire and cars fail to start. But then technology returns, and the magic recedes as unpredictably as it arose, leaving all kinds of paranormal problems in its wake.

Kate Daniels is a down-on-her-luck mercenary who makes her living cleaning up these magical problems. But when Kate's guardian is murdered, her quest for justice draws her into a power struggle between two strong factions within Atlanta's magic circles.

The Masters of the Dead, necromancers who can control vampires, and the Pack, a paramilitary clan of shapechangers, blame each other for a series of bizarre killings—and the death of Kate's guardian may be part of the same mystery. Pressured by both sides to find the killer, Kate realizes she's way out of her league—but she wouldn't have it any other way…

I had such high high hopes for this book. Everyone I know who has read it has raved about it and highly recommended it. I was certain I would fall in love with it within a few pages and devour the entire series.

Unfortunately, the book fell completely flat for me.

It has potential, don’t get me wrong. The basic premise of the series is fascinating. But the execution just flat out fails. The character development is lax, at best. The world-building is practically non-existent in the things that matter. I still don’t truly understand what happened to make the world turn into Kate’s world. I’m not entirely sure what happens in her world with the magic that comes and goes, but when it comes technology doesn’t work? Something like that. And explanations of the difference between the People, the Order, and the Guild were not forthcoming.

It feels kind of like there should have been another book before this one that really introduces you to the world and what’s happening in it. Since that didn’t happen, I found it difficult to follow along and never got invested in the story.

Details were lacking from important scenes. Continuity was an issue in some places.

Overall, this is just not my cup of tea. I’m sorry dear book bully Amanda, but we’re going to have to agree to disagree on this one. I also bought 2 and 3 in the series, but I imagine they will sit on my shelf until I’m desperate for something to read.

I’ll give you that. One of my issues that I had with this particular book was the lack of information, though I felt like it had enough potential to turn into a very good series once we were more situated into the world, and therefore didn’t let it bother me too much (which is where our opinions diverged, it seems). It took until the end of book 2 to get to that point.

I’m sorry you didn’t like this one. =/

No, not necessarily. If you didn’t really like the first one, I’m not going to try to convince you to go any further (what if you hate the next one even more?). I’m merely saying that I thought it got better.
